Charlie covering his ears
Two annoying girls moved into the apartment above me.
I'm forced to hear every dumb thing they say.
These are my letters to them.

I feel kind of silly for not knowing what cinco de mayo is all about. In elementary school we sang a song about it being “holiday time in Mexico” but I’m pretty sure no one in Mexico celebrates cinco de mayo… Does anyone know why it’s so special?

    • Sophie says:

It’s actually the date of a battle or something in a revolution in Mexico. I’m not sure, but I think it was actually pretty insignificant, though it’s been a little over a year since I was in World History class.

      • Sophie says:

“1862 – Cinco de Mayo: troops led by Ignacio Zaragoza halt a French invasion in the Battle of Puebla in Mexico.”

Thank you Wikipedia. Take it for what it’s worth.

    • Louisa says:

I’ve never even heard of it before…

  2. Cymberleah says:

Since next year is a leap year, the fifth will fall on Saturday. Only one more year to wait!

  3. stephanie says:

  4. Tigerr says:

  5. Leila says:

I’m surprised they actually wait until saturday to celebrate…..

  6. Mephistopheles says:

“Proud”, mildly less embarrassed, in one year, start counting the days.

  7. Joyousness says:

My husband is Mexican and this morning I wished him Happy Cinco de Mayo…. he rolled his eyes: I don’t think they celebrate it that much! Also as a side note It’s been a year since I ran across Dear Girls Above Me, I feel like its my anniversary!

  8. LovelyLauren says:

At least they kinda know what day it is. And Charlie, my friends are upset that you don’t follow us on twitter.

  9. Sarah Dani says:

  12. TJ says:

My mom’s birthday is on cinco de mayo, so I always forget that there’s a “holiday” going on. Maybe some day I’ll just get drunk with her to celebrate.

  13. OmNomNom says:

It may come sooner than you think. Next year is leap year.

  14. CookiesVs.Cupcakes says:

Oh, and, it will be next year when you’ll be a proud neighbor. 2012 it’s leap year.

  17. Robert says:

My spanish class last year (senior year of high school), our teacher had us do some dumb little “reenactment” of the Battle of Puebla on Cinco De Mayo. It was such a facepalm moment lol.

    • Robert says:

I forgot to mention, our swords were made of cardboard and some were all bent and floppy, while our “armor” was literally paper…

  18. Lizzy says:

I’m so living it up on a college campus right now… oh wait. It is the last class day and then we have finals; our students are going crazy working and me I’m procrastinating from procrastinating my homework. :) Thank-you Charlie!

  19. snidget86 says:

holy cow…i’ve been reading DGAM for over a year, but tonight i was binge reading…and this just absolutely was the perfect ending! i can’t stop laughing…they sound like my old roommates! there was a reason i moved out!

  20. KimeeFacce says:

Oh snap. I’m still alive, if anyone remembers me…

Cinco De Mayo? I’m Mexican, and I don’t even celebrate that….it’s celebrating the Battle of Puebla which was supposed to be some huge victory. But everyone beats the French, so it isn’t that big of a deal really…
Unless you wanna get shitfaced drunk. Then it’s the second biggest deal next to St. Patrick’s Day.

  21. Alex says:

I’M BACK! Did anyone miss me?

  22. Louisa says:

Why would the American’s celebrate something Mexican…am I being stupid here because I have no idea what the hell this is about????
I would think I was turning into a DGAM if I didn’t get the joke!

    • Jaime says:

Americans just use it as an excuse to drink tequila and wear sombreros. It really isn’t a big deal in Mexico.

  23. Lonely Girl says:

I know some people who celebrate Cinco de Mayo, but that’s probably due to the fact that I live in the south.

  24. Jacob says:

Butbutbut…you posted this on the fifth..Cinco…so..how could they have said it on the 7th, if it’s not the 7th yet?

  25. Jacob says:

Wow >< fail on my part for not reading it all V_V

  26. Lorreina says:

You think they know “cinco de mayo” means the 5th of May?

  27. “I’ve seen them at both Kroger and Walmart”…

“I understand they have very little taste. The amount of anti oxidants that they are known for depends on the process that is used to freeze dri them. Why don’t you try Monavie which combines the Acai with 18 other fruits for a great tasting drink hi…

  28. Lunar says:

Wow. They are celebrating Cinco de Mayo on my birthday. I feel so special =3

  29. Susie says:

“I’ve seen them at both Kroger and Walmart”…“I understand they have very little taste.
