Charlie covering his ears
Two annoying girls moved into the apartment above me.
I'm forced to hear every dumb thing they say.
These are my letters to them.

I’m proud of myself for knowing that when you say, “Totes that tote,” you’re really saying, “Yes, good choice in handbag.”

  1. Mephistopheles says:

You really shouldn’t be, but hell I’m writing this down.

  2. Sara says:

I figured these girls as Coach girls…but good for you, Charlie. I’m glad you’re in on their code words.

    • Rachel says:

Hey now, I have Coach bags AND shoes, but am nowhere near as idiotic as these girls (and had never heard the phrase “totes that tote”). Coach is not ≠ stupid.

      • Rachel says:

Damnit! I forgot to take the “not” out, which effectively makes my comment void. And NOW you may call me stupid. :)

  3. AnDROO says:

yeah not an easily known thing. i have to deal with my gf all the time talkin about shit like that

  4. angel says:

hahaha. Good job Charlie. It’s always good to be well-versed in GAM speak :)

  5. Bertie says:

I like it.. “totes that tote”
    Nice one GAM!

  6. Whitney says:

I never comment, but I had to for this. I mean, seriously, GAM?

  7. Jillian says:

Now that you’ve broken the code, you will have an even larger array of stupid things they’ve said to post.

  8. Charlie McDowell says:

I’m starting to become fluent. How dare my mom excuse me of not knowing another language!

    • Holly says:

Obviously you know a another language! Preppy valley lingo is most definitely a language!!!

    • Artsy Girl says:

Yeah how dare she *accuse* you of such a thing! Be careful Charlie, now that you understand them you might just become one of them…

      • David says:

STFU! dont correct Charlie! He is a genius!

      • Artsy Girl says:

Take it easy David, I was kidding around with him although I should’ve worded in a differently I hate that I sound like a grammar Nazi, eek. And yes, Charlie is a genius.

      • David says:

sorry, im just passionate about GAM, lol, im sure you can understand. :)

    • Alex says:

Good job, Charlie. What scares me is that I knew exactly what they were saying as soon as I read it.

  9. Tori! says:

this worries me and amuses me at the same time, Charlie. When you become completely fluent, you should make like a page as a dictionary.

  10. Katoka says:

I applaud you! I first thought they meant “Yes, I second that!”

  11. Alex says:

Wow Charlie, these girls have really had an impact on you, haven’t they?

  12. Grace says:

Careful, Charlie, don’t succumb!!! ;D Do a Sudoku now and then to combat the stupid falling from upstairs.

  13. Tigerr says:

There is this English TV series that started recently, called ‘Made in Chelsea’ and I now imagine GAM to be like Caggie and Funda. Yes those are the names.

    • Rosie says:

Yes! Exactly! Have to say I find reading deargirlsaboveme much more entertaining than I did that program. They could be a little bit The Only Way is Essex as well…

  14. Lovely Lauren says:

So it’s a whole different language on the other coast? I totally wouldn’t have understood “totes that tote”.

  15. lilmisslysha says:

Lol I love how everyone didn’t know what that meant :p me an my besties uses totes for like everyyythingg! Like say like “ohmigosh he was totes hot” :p

  16. Mystra says:

Maybe it’s ‘cuz I’m a girl, but it’s basically required to be fluent in prep in order to get clothes that fit. You can’t just tell the sales girl that you want a blue sweater, after all. There’s no way she could ever understand it.

    Way hilarious, this time, though.

  17. Sarah Dani says:

Ummmm, I live on the west coast (granted in the Central Valley), but I have NEVER heard someone say that! And I’m a high school teacher!

    • Mindy says:

Same here. I live in northern california, and I have seen people write “totes” but it’s not a word used in conversation. For us, it’s just for instant messaging and social networking sites. In a sense it’s similar to “lol” people understand it when you write it and it’s acceptable by society. However, if you were to say “lol” in a conversation you’d sound like an idiot. Granted, you’d probably laughing, but hopefully you understand what I’m trying to say.

    • Lisa(: says:

I live in Ohio, and am a senior in high school. Granted, my best friend is extremely homosexual, but he has about 1/3 of the building using ‘toats’ in regular vocabulary. He’s a riot though. But really? No toats in NC? That’s a suprise.

  18. SarahCari says:

I’m surprised it’s not more familiar to people. I’m in north Texas, and “totes” has definitely worked its way into my friends’ vocabulary. They usually use it in jest, but all the same…

  19. Tobia says:

Reminds me of my cousin’s slang of “totes my goats”. After i first saw her text that and even heard her say that, i still didn’t know what it ment…

Still one of the most awkwardly worded texts on any phone i have ever seen ever… and i have seen damnyouautocorrect.com……

  20. Gypsy says:

totally heard that expression from something else, like a movie or something.

  21. Rosie says:

Just thought of another funny variation on the word “totally”…well…sort of. Toulouse-Lautrec in “Moulin Rouge!”; “Totawwy awwone…” haha Just me getting this? Probably… -.-

  22. Caz says:

    Congratulations, Charlie! I congratulate you.

  23. Financial & Investment Management Advisors…

Very sunny article which persons ought to think re….

  24. john says:

wow, this is sad. Im a country boy from Texas and knew what that meant right away. The word “Tote” is well known as another word for “Schlepping” ie. a verb. A tote (n.) is a bag to carry something in. so, it reads like the following to me. “She can really carry (rock) that carrying bag” which is a fairly small logic leap to “awesome carrying bag” LOL. BTW, im in my mid 30’s, not a youngster by any means.

    • Lina says:

Extremely well explained, im from south america so it was a little confusing the Totes that tote, but thanks to you i got it!

  25. Lizzy says:

Well they do say submersion is a great way to learn a foreign language. Look, mom, I learned something in my Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language class!!!
