It was Aristotle. The Christopher Columbus thing was made up. He wasn’t trying to find out the world was round, he was trying to find a quicker route to India.
Besides, Columbus sailed in 1492. You know what was invented that year? The globe.
It was before Christopher Columbus. They knew the world was round, but they still thought that you could fall off if you went too far. Columbus proved that you couldn’t fall off the world
Just because people are asking. :P
Loving GAM. You make me laugh every time. Keep it up!
This is a little wrong too. A lot of misconceptions surround the story of Columbus, particularly around the part where he attempts to find support for his wild theories.
Now, the educated knew the world was round and nobody but the whacky weird winos thought you could actually fall off of it. What caused Columbus so much grief was that nobody was willing to spend the money to send him circumnavigating to India because they (correctly) disagreed with his estimates on distance.
Right. In fact the ancient Greeks calculated the circumference of the earth correctly. Columbus, however, claimed the world was only 75% of its true size. This is why he figured he could get to India quickly going in the other direction. Had he believed the true distance, he wouldn’t have tried (and when he got to America, he would have realized he hadn’t sailed nearly far enough to reach India).
She noticed that she was blank? The first step to fixing a problem is identifying it. Is this a cause for celebrating progress or for mourning the beginning of the end?
It’s too bad you can’t film them. But, that would take this to whole new(illegal) level. Perhaps you should take some of these comments and leave them in front of their door?
Charlie… It was Copernicus (first heliocentric model, if not the original idea). Columbus discovered America. Got to keep on your game, the GAM could be secretly running a site called, “Dear Guy Below Us;” this would be FODDER.
If you want to get technical, Lief Eriksson was the first European to find the Americas, over 400 years before Columbus. He and other Vikings established a colony in present-day Newfoundland, but the climate and First Nations people of the area drove them out shortly after.
Columbus brought the “New World” to general European knowledge and began the European colonization of the Americas, but he did not discover it….
However, all of this information is probably way too much for the GAC.
Good Sir: I was aware Leif Ericson’s colony, but I tend not to declare him the “discoverer” of the America’s. While he certainly got there first, he did not spread this knowledge throughout the known world; something Columbus surely did. As an analogy, take Copernicus. While he was not the first to imagine a heliocentric solar system, he popularized the idea, and we tend to credit him with the “discovery.” I hope this clarifies my intent when I said that Columbus “discovered” America.
Magellan. Magellan was the first credited European explorer to truly prove the world was round by circumnavigating the globe (although he didn’t finish the journey, just his ship). Columbus THOUGHT he had gone around the world, because he thought he was in the orient, but he only made it about halfway.
I think he means halfway to the orient (india) Not halfway across the world…. which according to my desk Globe, looks to be about a third of the way around the world to where Columbus landed… and about another third of the earth to india…
Tobia, Not meaning to be mean/rude, and I hope I don’t sound that way, but it’s a US History text book for my 8th grade class, it’s not going to be accurate :D
Look, you can pull out actual history, or the 6th grade history you MIGHT expect the GAC to know. He was supplying the answer they were looking for, which is not to say it’s the most correct answer. I mean, they weren’t even sure what question they were asking. I don’t think they could possibly handle anything more complex.
Couldn’t have put it better myself, Shiva. All of these people obviously know the minute details of the issue at hand, but seem incapable of stepping back and seeing THAT bigger picture you just described. Win for you. :)
I recently learned that people already knew it was round, but didn’t want to finance Columbus because they believed he had seriously underestimated the Earth’s circumference. Obviously, they were right…
Umm sweetheart you’re always blanking we expect that from you… and btw first time commenting long time GAC stalker :D… also what happen to the girl with the poems??
Christopher Columbus did not discover the world was round. Europe already believed that at the time, for the most part, thanks to the Greeks. Just thought I’d get this out. Columbus was searching for a trade route to India because he was a commercial profit hound and a lower nobleman seeking glory and riches and all that shit– he was sure as hell not trying to prove that the egde of the world was a fable.
I know this isn’t history class, but I just thought I’d get that out. =)
As always, I think your DGAM posts are pure win. ^___^
I would like to add that one reason my people were reluctant to fund his voyage was because his belief in the size of the world greatly underestimated it’s actual size (Which was first calculated by Eratosthenes to within 1% more than 200 years BC)
Most of the popular legend of Christopher Columbus that Americans have is due to a series of books called “The Life And Voyages of Christopher Columbus”, which was a highly embellished story.
[…] Wonderful story, reckoned we could combine a few unrelated data, nevertheless really worth taking a look, whoa did one learn about Mid East has got more problerms as well […]……
Very good written information. It will be useful to anybody who employess it, as well as me. Keep doing what you are doing canr wait to read more posts….
they should be quizzed on general knowledge.
Wouldn’t that rather have to be Pythagoras, Aristotle or Eratosthenes?
they have a hard enough time remembering Christopher Columbus, I’m not sure they could handle any of those names.
Be awesome if those were the only names they could remember
It was Aristotle. The Christopher Columbus thing was made up. He wasn’t trying to find out the world was round, he was trying to find a quicker route to India.
Besides, Columbus sailed in 1492. You know what was invented that year? The globe.
i honestly can’t believe they actually think the world is flat, but for them to even have to think about it just re-establishes my love for the GAC.
Hey, at least they knew kind of what they were talking about
Wasn’t it before columbus Charlie…
It was before Christopher Columbus. They knew the world was round, but they still thought that you could fall off if you went too far. Columbus proved that you couldn’t fall off the world

I face-palmed so hard at this I think my forehead is bruised.
Uh-oh. Dear god.
She noticed that she was blank? The first step to fixing a problem is identifying it. Is this a cause for celebrating progress or for mourning the beginning of the end?
i think we’ll be fine they’ve had a lot of false starts
It’s too bad you can’t film them. But, that would take this to whole new(illegal) level. Perhaps you should take some of these comments and leave them in front of their door?

They should change the name of that show to “Are You Smarter Than GAM?”.
Then everyone would win.
Precisely…except for that one girl who thought Europe was a country *facepalm*
That’s not so bad… I once worked with a girl who legit thought Paris was a continent.
Magellan. Magellan was the first credited European explorer to truly prove the world was round by circumnavigating the globe (although he didn’t finish the journey, just his ship). Columbus THOUGHT he had gone around the world, because he thought he was in the orient, but he only made it about halfway.
Well, actually Columbus only made it a quarter of the way. And don’t tell me I’m wrong I have the SS textbook right in front of me :)
I think he means halfway to the orient (india) Not halfway across the world…. which according to my desk Globe, looks to be about a third of the way around the world to where Columbus landed… and about another third of the earth to india…
Tobia, Not meaning to be mean/rude, and I hope I don’t sound that way, but it’s a US History text book for my 8th grade class, it’s not going to be accurate :D
lol i figured you’re younger because you called it a “Social Studies” (SS) Textbook and not a geography or history book.
I was sayin’ that because you said “And don’t tell me I am wrong” ;)
Actually the first person to SAY that the earth was round was Aristotle…
Oh dear, Charlie. I think living below these girls must have lowered your IQ a little bit.
Look, you can pull out actual history, or the 6th grade history you MIGHT expect the GAC to know. He was supplying the answer they were looking for, which is not to say it’s the most correct answer. Thank you, dear. It’s good to know someone agrees ^-^
I recently learned that people already knew it was round, but didn’t want to finance Columbus because they believed he had seriously underestimated the Earth’s circumference. Obviously, they were right…
I think it’s funny how technical everyone’s getting on this one:) I don’t know about you guys, but I just come here for the laughs, not facts! lol
ditto
Sometimes I wonder if you make these up but then I go to my U.S. History class…and my classmates open their mouths…..
Umm sweetheart you’re always blanking we expect that from you… and btw first time commenting long time GAC stalker :D… also what happen to the girl with the poems??
Hahaha is that a Dr. Horrible reference?
Hey, just wanted to pop in to say this:
Christopher Columbus did not discover the world was round. Europe already believed that at the time, for the most part, thanks to the Greeks. Just thought I’d get this out. Columbus was searching for a trade route to India because he was a commercial profit hound and a lower nobleman seeking glory and riches and all that shit– he was sure as hell not trying to prove that the egde of the world was a fable.

Most of the popular legend of Christopher Columbus that Americans have is due to a series of books called “The Life And Voyages of Christopher Columbus”, which was a highly embellished story.
Also, 1492 is the year the globe was invented.
:)
Actually it was a guy named Pythagoras in 6th century athens, who first thought it was round then eratosthenes in 240 BC proved it. Sorry charlie.
dang guys, just go with it
Like.
Christopher Columbus didn’t discover the world was round… how awkward for you.
Shut up, Meg.
When I discovered that the world was round, I was a small kid who had just seen a globe.
it was Erastosthenes. I’m prettty sure “Chirstopher Columber” was sarcarm…
Columbus*
